Once upon a time, in a land far and dreary, our ancestors eked out a living at whatever trade they had whether farming, millwright, wainwrith, smithy, tanner, teacher or any number of trades. Unless, they were rich of course.
Many of them became dissatisfied with the way life was in the old country, many were persecuted for their religions or other beliefs. So, across the waters they came to America and, hopefully a better life. At this time, they came this way:

As time went by and transportation improved: they then begin to come to this country by this means:

arriving in hours for a trip that took the earlier ones, weeks or months!
Many of these people now stay in the larger cities. Few, if any, settle in the smaller towns where they might have to work for a living. Those that came before are now many generations down the road to using the cowboy cadillac, the country limo, the southern dream:

That is, unless they get into some of that good ole boy stuff and mama takes away their keys. But, you know, a good old boy can always find a way:

and use a time honored means of transportation:
