WITH BONDLESS FAITH (1971) (Revised 1996)

Throughout these long and lonely nights, I sit.
Eyes staring into dark emptiness,
Seeing nothing but shadows,
Dark shadows.

Ears hearing sounds
That are not sounds;
But nothing more than a
Whisper of days gone by.

Smelling smells that once
Were the breath of life and comfort,
But now,
Only musty emptiness.

Lips longing for the taste of life,
But only whispering words
Into the darkness that
Surrounds me like a blanket.

My legs want to walk, but cannot
For they know not where to go.
I cannot talk for I know not what to say.
Words are only words to be used for nothing.

So, with bondless faith, I sit, look, and listen.
Hoping that someday the heartaches I've had,
The teardrops I've shed,
Will only make life dearer in days to come.

But lo, somewhere in the shadows,
between the twilight and the dark,
Lurks an image.
Shy, withdrawn, troubled.

Not beautiful, yet lovely,
Hair as soft as silk,
Eyes that shine as diamonds.
Lips, moist, soft and warm.

I cannot place a face to this image,
Yet I feel I know it,
Shy, yet lively; firm yet soft, withdrawn.
But projecting a quality unknown to this world.

The image I perceive is that of an Angel,
A troubled Angel,
That would, but she could,
Emerge from the twilight into the bright warm sunshine.

And again; I sit with bondless faith,
Eyes staring into the twilight,
For just a glimpse
Of that faceless image.

Ears searching for some sound,
That may be meant for me.
Smelling the lustre of
The perfume of life.

Arms, hands reaching
Into the shadows,
Yet never far enough
To touch that elusive image.

Lips longing for the
Taste of the honey,
From the lips of that
Faceless image.

My legs try to move me.
But, I tremble with fear,
That if I do,
The image will disappear.

I am afraid to speak,
For I fear the words
I'll utter are
not enough.

So here I sit,
With bondless faith,
Waiting for the materialization of
That image into reality someday.
